Yonas is the first child from the project to receive a tennis scholarship in the USA.


The US NGO "Advantage Ethiopia" is created to help raise funds for TDKET.





The Kindernothilfe and the Manfred Lautenschläger foundation become financial supporters. From that point it is possible to support 66 children in the project.

Due to an unannounced road expansion next to the courts, the toilets and shower room suffer serious damage.

Haile Gebreselassie is added to the list of patrons for the project.

The "Circle of Friends" is founded.





The project becomes a registered non-governmental organization (NGO). It is now permitted to receive donations. The official name is: Tariku and Desta Kids` Education through tennis- Ethiopia (TDKET).

The Greek Club has no more room for the project. Tariku and Desta must find new courts.


Wilfried Lemke; Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, becomes a patron of the project.


Pupils of the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in Germany raise funds for the project. Due to this every child receives a daily hot meal.

Bruno Böhler makes contact with the Racket Center in Nußloch. He convinces Matthias Zimmermann to invite a small group from Ethiopia. Training, lessons and tournaments will be part of the visit.

The Dennis van der Meer Tennis Academy in the USA invites Tariku to complete his PTR coaching credentials. The two most promising players (Meron and Yonas) take part in the Junior Orange Bowl Championship, in Florida.


Due to top placings in local tournaments some of the children are selected for the Ethiopian National Team.


12 successful children continue in the project.


It is a tough program and there are strict rules. Tennis training is held before and after school and school grades must not slip!


The program starts. 20 children are selected during trials at the Greek Club.


Brothers Tariku and Desta Tesfaye (National Ethiopian Tennis players) have a dream. They want to help disadvantaged children through tennis.
